*1978 in Medellin, Colombia. Early educated in classical ballet, after finishing school, Brenda went to Germany for educating. After 18 years learning, working and performing in Europe, she returned 2013 to live in Colombia, where she launched the Fundación Espacio Arte, a non-profit organization based in a rural region of Medellin (Colombia) and which approach relies on boosting dynamics of social transformation through multidisciplinary artistic and pedagogical projects.
In Europe, parallel to her studies in philosophy and Literature (MA of the University of Hamburg), she attended classes, workshops and summer academies on contemporary dance techniques and contemporary choreographic work and got involved as a teacher and performer with Argentinian Tango. In numerous projects, participating as a performer, creator and doer, her artistic work emerges through the dialog between choreography and other disciplines, always having a singular relationship to the concrete space and social environment. Brenda Isabel’s artistic path has developed in an experimental context, exploring different approaches and methods through the body, the word and the image. Her academic background and her concern about the social and political dimension of artistic work have shaped her professional inquiries. She has been engaged with different artist’s collective in Germany and Colombia, an experience which has foster a deep believe in the value of collaborative work. ![]()

choreography
I work around an expanded concept of choroegraphy and am mostly interested in site-specific projects. In the last time I keep on asking myself how to connect my artistic work to my social and political engagement and the result is a series of documentary performances and performative interventions related to the physical and social spaces I inhabit.
Once during a workshop, a participant gave the best definition about contemporary dance, I've ever heard. She said: 'contemporary dance is art with the body'. I also remeber a lot the words of my friend and teacher Gyohei Zaitsu: "The body is a place where forces jostle and intersect. Where do these forces come from? I do not know. The body exists beyond my comprehension. And each time I dance, the memory is renewed. Life dances. I cannot impede it" |

teachING
Teaching is for me one of the most beautiful ways to build a relationship: deeply human in its fragility, it's intensity and fugacity. I thank all my students the many chances they have gave me to learn.
My classes, workshops and labs are led by the believe that every one has a huge creative potential which we try to activate through asking the body. In my work, body, speech and image play many times an equal role in finding ways to express and be. |
